mouseOne of the things that is talked about allot in the traffic exchange industry is surf timers. Are they to long or are they to short?.  The ones who like the long timers will tell you they need to be long so that your ad gets the view it deserves. Then there are the short timer fans that say if your ad is any good at all they’ll stay on the page even if the timer has ran out. Of course we all know there are those that just click click click. Then there are the bad ads, the pages that just suck. When we see those on a long surf timer were like OMG when is this timer going to finish. At I least that what I say lol.

For me personally the length of the timer really doesn’t matter as long as its under 10 seconds. And here’s why. If you take a site with a long timer like say Tezak Traffic Power where the timer is 8 seconds ( Sunny Suggs keep trying to get Tony Tezak to change it). If you surf it by itself  its really not that bad. But what I do is this TTP is part of the TE Command Post Surf right?. So its simple I combine Tezak Traffic Power with the other Te Command Post sites. Traffic Splash, Dragon Surf, Fast Easy Traffic and traffic swirl . What happens is the timers are about the same so when you do it this why its not so bad and your building up your credits in 5 traffic exchange at once.  Same goes with short surf timer TE’s. You can tab surf with other Te’s with short timers or you can just do those one at a time. The reality of it all is this its not the length of the surf timers that matter its your ad in rotation if your ad pops you will get people to stay and look at it even after the timer has run down. Maybe even take action on it. But if your ad is just plain Jane. Does the length of the surf timer really matter? It could be a 30 minute timer but I’m sorry if your ad is blah your still not going to get results. So Yea Its Not the Timers is Your Ads

Alright know that I’ve put my thought’s on the matter out there. What’s your opinion on this matter? Let me know, heck let everyone know in the comments below. I’ll do my best to respond to everyone who comments

Jon Olson says:

You hit the nail on the head man….It doesnt matter how long your timers are….If you don’t have an ad that pops…It wont matter. I think people should focus more on what they advertise, and start getting better results from that, rather than focusing on a timer and how long or short it is…

scottrohn says:

We can only hope. Bu yea I used to be all about the short timers. But I soon discovered they don’t matter its your ads. Sd I look at my tracker and see I’m getting subscribers from both long and short surf timers TE’s. Thanks for your comment Jon

Blain Jones says:

I agree that if you are advertising anywhere on the internet, not just traffic exchanges, your ad needs to pop out and be much more noticeable than everything else out there. That is a part of the mix of a formula that is used to get results.

Surf timers have been and will probably always be a topic of debate across the traffic exchange industry. Surfers want this, advertisers want this, owners want this, etc… The real answer is results, I do not care if your surf timer is 1 second or 50 seconds, as long as I get results from your exchange. And I am not talking about getting 1,000 page views and checking results. I base results on at least 50k views at a site. Only because the more hits you get, the more accurate your result stats will be. But I am a super nerd when it comes to tracking.

But back on the subject, I want results. Surf timers are irrelevant unless my tracking shows a significant difference in results at an exchange with a short vs. long timer. But there are also many other things than timers that can contribute to results from an exchange.

Timers are only one variable of multiple that contribute to results.

And those are my random thoughts for the day!!

scottrohn says:

Thanks for the comment Blain Your absolutely right Timers are irrelevant, There purpose is to let you know you can go to the next page, that being said if the ad your looking at has got your attention just becausee the timer has counted down if you like what your looking at there is no rule saying you can’t spend a little more time looking at the ad.

Paul Germana says:

We’ve heard it at Sweeva surf parties; we need an eye catching and relevant ad. Simply put, If people feel like someone is on the other end who can help them learn, they are likely to sign up just for that reason. The fact that your ad looks great is another of the benefits of a good first impression; and it’s what makes that difference in getting people to STOP and sign up for our list

scottrohn says:

You hit the nail right on the head Paul. People need to stop worrying about the timers and worry more about there ads

I think tab surfing has made timers less relevant. If someone is surfing 4 sites with each with an eight second timer, those sites might just as well have 2 second timers because that’s how long each will be viewed for anyway.

I think a great ad is vital but I also think the market that the TE is aiming at also relevant. A pro exchange and other exchanges that take quality seriously are more likely to have surfer that will take your ads seriously than sites that attract penny clickers.

scottrohn says:

Well yea if your tab surfing like I gave the example of in the post the timers really don’t matter.

Mary Goble Thomas says:

I absolutely agree that it’s the ad that counts, but I disagree that timers are irrelevant. If they were, then why would so many TEs include shorter timers as upgrade incentives, and sell “short timer” packages? Surf competitions and games get more people excited about surfing, and they get more eyeballs on the ads and more people willing to join new TEs, but they also encourage the “click click click” and they do create desire and demand for shorter timers. (Raise your hand if you have employed and enjoyed the 0 second timer at ListBuildSurf during Daily Challenge!) I agree with Scott that if someone is interested in an ad, there is nothing forcing them to move on when the timer is up.

scottrohn says:

Yes we do need the timers to let us know when its ok to go to the next page. When we go to the next page well that’s really up to us isn’t it?

Marcus Wahl says:

It’s interesting that one of the points for shorter timers is that people tab surf. Sure enough you laid it on us with commando surf 🙂 I like your logo Scott. It’s always a fun one to discuss the timers!

scottrohn says:

Hi Marcus Yea I guess the timer discussion will be one that goes on an on. And thanks Norbert did the Logo

HI Scott great post. I feel that short timers make it harder for people to stop and look at your site even if your site looks great and pops out. And if they are surfing for a team and pennies they aren’t going to pay attention no matter what. And if they use traffic browser automatic tab surfing they see nothing. That was my experience. I saw nothing. I was only focused on the number of pages I was getting through. But that’s me. I know if I surf with short timers normally, I don’t see what is there. The longer timers keep my attention more because I am forced to pay attention to the site. I know there are other people like me. I understand how you and others might see sites with short timers, but I don’t very well.

I do agree that the page needs to be short, to the point and needs to capture the surfers attention! No matter how long the timer is, I am not going to read a page of boring text.

scottrohn says:

Thanks for your comment Barb. I understand your thoughts about short timers. But if your ad stands out and your do. You should have nothing to worry about
